My iphone 5 with iOS 8 not providing suggested words in messaging.

That was happening to my 5s as well. I did a basic shut down (turned off/on) and it hasn't happened again. hope this helps, if not try a hard reset.

You should be able to push up on the little line in the middle of the gray line above the keyboard to restore the QuickType display.
