Does "I've gotten as far as 'backups'" mean that you restored a backup? If not, please explain. If the photos were in your "Camera Roll" when you created the backup, I'm assuming an iCloud backup, then they should restore back to your computer when you restore the backup. If the photos were in your Photo Stream, then they will not be backed up because they already exist in the cloud. All you should have to do is reconfigure the device with iCloud and then enable photo stream in order for those pics to re-sync to your device. If the photos were saved via an iTunes backup, restore the iTunes backup. If those photos were deleted prior to backing up your device, and they are/were not in your photostream, they are lost.
