You can turn off contact syncing in Settings

But your contacts will no longer be saved should a disaster occur.

I recommend creating your own Apple ID and setting up family sharing if that was the reason to share a single Apple ID. I know several people that share the same ID for sharing apps, so Family Sharing will resolve this for you.

Goto Settings --> ICloud --> turn of Contracts. It will ask
"What would you like to do with the previously synced contacts on your iphone?"
Just select
"Delete from My iPhone"
. Now you have all your husbands contacts removed.

Re: How do we keep from mixing contacts using Apple id

i use icloud for contacts so don't hold me to this but you may also be able to turn off icloud like above but use like a google account for your own contacts. I did that originally and for my old palm phone. I set up a gmail (google) account entirely to store addresses. In settings then you could add that account under "mail, contacts, calenders", then turn on contacts just for that but not mail, unless you wanted the mail. Then you'd have you're husbands apple id for buying apps and other stuff but the only concacts you'd see would be the ones stored in this fresh google account. They may even sync to each other similar to icloud, that is changes on your phone are automatically added to gmail, but again, it's been years since i've done that and it was on a palm pre and it was super tempermental and i remember being very happy to be on icloud because it worked.
