Why won't my ringtones work

I downloaded a ringtone on my phone and told me I could not get it so I downloaded it on my iPad and now I can find it on my phone I have a iPhone

I'm not sure what you mean by it telling you that you could not get it. Where did you download it from? ITunes or a third party site? Some third party sites are dodgy, I lost money that way.
