Which is a good purchase?

I am looking at a Mac Mini Server and Airport Time Capsule and Synology as well. Currently, I have a Mac Mini late 2009 desktop running Mavericks. I am looking at the Mini Server and ATC or Synology to act as a backup for iPhoto and iTunes. As well as general storage.

I know the Mini server and ATC has good features and benefits. However, I would NOT be using the ATC as a router only for storage. However, Synology has some good features.

Bottomline, I am looking for something to act as a backup storage server/capsule to handle the growing iPhoto and iTunes libraries.

Wouldn't it be easier to just buy a 500 GB to 1 TB external USB drive or something?
