Why is there a red number badge on the Settings icon on my iPad?

Since I installed iOS 8 on my iPad Air, there is a red 1 beside the settings icon. I don't know what it means or how to get rid of it.
Is there something that I need to change in settings now?

The only time I saw a red badge on my Settings icon is when there was an os update. I would check that out if you haven't already...even if you did update.

Just installed iOS 8 a few days ago but checked and it says software is up to date. Never had this problem before.
