I want my son to read ibooks on his iPad, is it possible to turn off access to everything else (all the apps/games etc) so he doesn't play games instead of reading?! Many thanks.

Is this an ipad that you already own and have the apps and games on? You can work within restrictions to limit what they can do. You can turn off safari and not allow downloads etc. can they get around stuff yeah probably.

You have a couple of good options:

    1. Set up a passcode only you know, this is IMPORTANT

    2. As phreddyl already said, you can go to settings --> restrictions and from there turn on/off whatever it is you want your kid to have access.

    3. Go to settings --> general --> accessibility and look for "Guided access". Here's what it is and how to use it (it's with iOS6 but it hasn't changed in iOS7) How to put your iPad into "Guest User" mode with Guided Access | iMore OR read here too How to setup guided access on iPad or iPhone using iOS 7

    Good luck
