I have an original ipad that was working fine and now has a black screen. It is recognized in iTunes and I was able to do a restore but that didn't help. The screen is still black. What hardware failure(s) can cause this? Can it be I need a new lcd? Or is there something else that can be the cause

    Thanks

    Possibly the iPad's display.

If by LCD, you mean a new display, then yes, that's the likely culprit. Make a genius bar appointment with the nearest Apple Store and let them troubleshoot it for you.
