I understand there is no data charges for texts. If photo or video is sent also, is there data charge? I am new to iMessage but plan to buy an iphone and have an ipad already, so data is verty important. thanks for any help.

Actually you will be charged for data usage when using iMessage unlike SMS. IOS iMessage service is data based

No data $ charges for iMessage as long as it is between iDevices. If you text with someone who's using an Android phone, you may be charged by your carrier. You will, however, use data when not on wifi. And no charge for sending photos or videos to another iDevice. But again, that will use data when not on wifi. So keep in mind your data plan too.

Between iDevices on wifi, no charge.
Between iDevices on cellular, uses your data plan so the 3GB a month LTE data or whatever you pay your carrier for.
Between iDevice and a non-iDevice. If your carrier plan has unlimited sms, then no charge. Otherwise charge depends on your carrier plan, for example I pay ATT 20 cents per text and 30 cents per MMS (sms that includes photo or video).
