Go to Settings - Notifications - Mail - (your email account) then select "Alerts" as well as the "Show on Lockscreen" option.

Hello and welcome! Just remember if you set your notifications that way, other people close by may see your mail.

Does it need the "Alerts" on? I have it on "None" with "Show on Lockscreen.
