My iPad notified me of an update so I attempted to update it and it now won't turn on. All I'm getting is an image of a charger cable with an arrow above it pointing to an image of the iTunes app. Can anybody shed any light on this??

Thats DFU mode. Either just reboot by holding the home button and sleep button for 10 seconds. If that does not help and takes you back to DFU mode. Then connect the iPod to iTunes using lighting cable and restore your device. Hope you had backed it up earlier. All the best.

He's in "recovery mode" if he's seeing that image on his device's retina display. In DFU mode, he won't see anything on the display.

I think the OP said he has an iPad not an iPhone that it is happening to but either way at least he has been given advice on what to do to take care of his problem.

This happened to my iPad 2 on the iOS 7.1.2 update and I had to restore it. It's just one of those things that happens from time to time

Very true and I suppose on my iPad mini Retina and 5S both my recent updates went smooth.
