My son is a college freshman and we are choosing between a 13" Macbook Air and the 13" Macbook Pro with Retina display. Which is recommended?

If all he is going to be using it for is things like web, email, word documents and what not, the Air will be good for his needs.

If he needs more performance for things like video editing and what not then you should look into the Pro.

I have a Macbook Air, my husband has a Pro:

The Air is a solid one piece, I drop it all the time, it doesn't have a dent or a problem. The Pro is heavier and seems more delicate. I have zero issues with the performance of the Air.

I agree with Beyond Fire above. if all he's going to be using it for is email, internet browsing and dissertation writing, then the air will be plenty good enough. If he needs something with more 'oomph' for video editing then the Pro would be a better bet.

Don't forget you can upgrade the laptops at point of sale too on the Apple Store. Obviously with standard configuration, the air will cost less than the Pro.

As stated above, the MBA, should work out great for him.
