Is the MacBook Air or rMBP better for research papers, photos, & videos?

I'm a university student that has many written research assignments, photo essays and video projects, which is better for me the macbook air or the macbookpro with retina?

Either of them would do well for your needs but if you want something sleek and lightweight, go for Macbook Air.

If you are doing a lot of post-production processing and doing any kind of rendering on your photos, spring for the rMBP. Serious photographers would also get more mileage out of the super resolution and color representation on the rMBP's display but the MBA is more than capable of basic photo manipulations and assembly in presentation software or the like.

The MBA is capable, to a limited degree, of doing heavy video editing but for any serious filmmaking, (ie not just editing some casual YouTube videos), I'd definitely recommend springing for an rMBP with a processor upgrade.
