I'm not sure why you would need to delete those if you have already deleted them in the phone contacts...

Anyone else can chime in on this?

If that number has been deleted as a contact, then it should now show a circled "i" to the right of the number in Recents. Like this:

Tap the circled "i" and then tap to remove from recents. Like this:

Also make sure any open message thread for this number is deleted.

Wait...You have no phone service and you're on an older iOS. You may need that number on the thread list in order to remove it from Recents. But that means you would have to send it a text. Being an older iOS, I'm not sure. What iOS are you on?
