Inconsistent iCloud backup

I started using iCloud for my iPhone backup when I got my iPhone 5 Sept. '12, and continue to use it with a 5S. On the iTunes desktop I have set "Automatuc backup" to iCloud; I plug my phone into the charger each night, but some nights go by where it doesn't automatically back up. iCloud backup is an important part of my redundant backup (I run my business on the iPhone), so I would like to make sure that it does happen each night. Here's some pertinent info:

Home network: Cisco router to Comcast internet
Phone memory=64GB
Storage plan: Free 5GB
What's backed up: data only, no music and perhaps any random few pictures in camera roll at the time.
Total backup file size: 1.5GB

It should back up while you plug it in but it could be that your iPhone is not connecting to your router when you're plugging it up. You can also force it to back up to iCloud in the settings if you'd like
