iphone 5c photo download to mac

Previously, my photo download, with Iphone 3 was automatic. I just upgraded to a 5c and now can't get my images onto my mac. There doesn't seem to be any recognition of the images from iphoto, other than a symbol of my iphone in the column just above my albums. Is something amiss?

1. When you connect your device to your computer and fire up the iTunes app, make sure sync is enable for the photos.
