We've all seen threads where people have seen kids as young as 5 have a smartphone to carry as their own, and I'm not here to debate the age in which a kid should be allowed to carry a smartphone. That's up to the parents anyway. What I'd like to know is this: Would it be better to give a first time smartphone owner an iPhone because of its ease of use or an Android or other type because of the many customization settings. Personally, I think an iPhone would be better, especially for a kid. I think the many settings that a non-Apple device has can be a bit overwhelming and could cause them to select things they don't quite understand. Yes, I know there are parental settings and/or restrictions that can be enabled. Anyway, let's hear your take on it.

iPhone but only because as my family's designated tech support that's what I know best.

iPhone for sure because it's easy to use and dependable. To be honest, I don't want to have to deal with phone problems with my kids. Just sayin'.

I would go with an iPhone...and I have recommended it to both young and old who are new to smartphones. iPhones are easy to use and user friendly. I feel that androids are more for those who enjoy tinkering and changing around the device...like someone who would build their own computer.

Actually now that I think about it....Your old one when you are due for an upgrade and get the newest one on the market.

My 10 year old niece asked for an iPad for Xmas because she had an iPod Touch her brother handed down to her and she loved it. They bought her a Galaxy Tab instead, and she hates it and never uses it. To me, that pretty clearly tells me that in her case (which I tend to assign to most kids anyways), the iDevices would be the optimal choice.

    I would say a hand-me-down iPhone 4 or 4S to start with.

Move up to a nice colourful 5C afterwards perhaps, depending on age of course.

IPhone for sure, but an earlier model. Then let them decide from there.

I started my little brother when he was 6 with an iPod touch than when he had to go to the babysitters I got him a 4. Now at 10 years old he's rocking a 5S Gold. He deserved it for his good grades and how good of a kid he is. I like to spoil him what can I say!

I'd say that an iPhone is best phone for little kids and even senior citizens due to its simplicity and ease of use.

I did the same thing with my 10 year old niece. She kept asking for an iPad so I bought her a Galaxy Tab. She barely touches the thing and still asks if she can use my iPad.

    I don't blame her!

If we're talking a young kid, who doesn't actually "need" a phone, I'd go with an iPod. Otherwise, definitely iPhone for their first phone. Parental features are great, and it's awful hard for them to mess things up.

Currently, I would give them a 5c. It honestly depends on the kid.

It depends on the age of the kid...very young, I would give them an iPod touch or older generation iPhone but for an older kid, I'd let them choose.
