In the App Store for Clumsy Ninja, it states the following:

"Make sure you play online to gain access to the latest content and features, and to ensure that your profile is backed up online"

With that in mind, do you have a profile set? If so, the game may be trying to save it on its server and if you're not connected to the internet, that could be the reason for the connection error.
