Assuming you meant "desired" and not required, I think it would probably a function of iMessage that allows for chatting amongst people, regardless of platform, natively on the device...allowing a person to communicate to people on a spectrum of devices in the ecosystem, regardless of what ecosystem the other person resides in. This would require all devices to move away from SMS completely though, which makes me think it's not going to happen for a long time (if ever).
