No sound on ipad when I plug in headphones

On my IPAD when I plug in headphones I lose the sound.

Is it completely plugged in tight? Have you recently used a blue tooth device that might still be hooked up? Do you have the silent switch on and the volumn turned up. Look for the simple things first.
