Whats app sound is missing

I am not able to know the new msgs through whats app as it doesn't sound ,only if the phone is in front of me I can see the new msgs on screen but not able to listen the tone same time I noticed that my ring tone is not in proper style, the moment I receive a call it gives me a small tick sound for a second and then start ringing.It happened all of a sudden.I am using this I Phone 4S for the last 1 1/2 years.

Delete the app and reboot your Phone to clear any bad cache you might have and reinstall the app and set it up again. I should also ask you are talking about the app and not the phone right?
