A wild stab is that if tyou are trying to connect an IOS device be it a new device with 9 pin lightning cable or an older device with the larger USB Connector simply plug one end into the USB port of your computer and the other end to your device and launch iTunes. It will take a moment to recognize it ans you will see it on the left side of iTunes.
