iphone 5 went dead and requiring to be connected to itunes? Minutes before it was working then image showing in the screen to plug to itunes.

So - plug into iTunes, and restore the iOS and re-sync apps, media, etc... and restore from your last good back-up.

Just restore. You proabaly did something to put it in Recovery Mode.
