I sold a MacBook last year and followed instructions how to wipe it but never deregistered it online. I had no clue that even existed.

Is there anything to worry about? What do registering it and deregistering it do?

    Thanks!

Not in your instance. It's primarily for iOS devices that are more prone to be stolen. With iOS 7, Apple instituted an activation lock mechanism that needs to be removed by the owner in order for someone else to be able to use the device in case it is lost or stolen.
