    Thunderbolt tech didn't come into play until the early 2011 machines...so no, you don't have that option on a 2009 model.

    You should be able to use a display port connector. I believe that they are interoperable with thunderbolt as far as displays go (but not for other data transfer). Or worst case if that's not correct, get an hdmi to display port adapter and use that to connect to the display.

    I’m confused about what the OP is trying to do... sounds like he wants to use the display on a retina MBP as a display on his iMac... that’s not possible as far as I know. If he want's to connect a high resolution monitor to his iMac, then yes, an adapter is required. Karen is correct, the Thunderbolt and Display Port connections are inter-changeable for this purpose.
