Are you using an HDMi connection? If so, try a different HDMi port, if the problem still exists, try another HDMi cord. Sometimes older cables (and older TV' at times too) can cause signal drop page where both audio/video isn't processed properly...many times this is remedied by switching ports or cords, and there is a slight chance you might have a bad port on the Apple TV (which would be easily replaced by Apple under warranty).

Using the TV's speakers, or an external audio system? If using an external system, could be an issue between the TV & the external system - or as noted above, an issue with the HDMI port on the TV not getting sound to the external audio system.
