I have an Iphone 5 s and my kids disable the phone after a number of attempts to access the phone. how long with the phone be disabled for. I remember the passcode?

I do not remember having a time limit and please if I am wrong step in and correct me. I believe you are going to have to set up as new in iTunes as the only way to reverse it.

When you enter the password or see the home screen it should tell you the duration. EX: "iPhone is Disabled, try again in 1 minute".

Your Options (in this order, if the one before it fails):
1.Restore device from a backup
-If it does not work, try #2
2.Put device into Recovery Mode
-If #1 and #2 have not worked, try #3
3.Put device into DFU Mode

Assuming your iPhone locked you out restore is your only option

You must put it on disable after 10 times of wrong tempting,you can call apple and they will answer gladly
