I bought a Mac Air a year ago and am just getting ready to buy a gadget for backup. How important is it to invest in Time Capsul when my storage needs are pretty basic. I see that I can buy external storage for under $100.&

    Any external
Drive will do the trick and work with Time Machine.
Time Capsule is a router and hard drive combined and can be convenient because you can backup over wifi, but if you will remember to occasionally plug in your cheap external
drive for a backup, them that will work just as well.

Nope, you don't "need" it, but it's certainly a pretty cool device. I personally don't have one, and just use a network WD drive to back up my systems.
