Doesen't that sound like a hardware falior.

It could indeed be a hardware problem, but before you take it to a nearby Apple Store to have one of the geniuses look at it, I recommend you connect it to iTunes, backup your data, put the device in DFU mode and then restore and set it up as new via iTunes. Afterwards, your phone should auto-detect 3G or LTE, depending on your wireless provider and your wireless plan. If not, make an appointment with the nearest Apple Store.
