how do I stop the iphone from picture rotating?

When viewing the picture. Don't turn the phone.

You can use orientation lock. Via control center.

in iOS7 - activate the control center - and tap the rotation lock icon in the far right if the top row... in other versions, the rotation lock is in the settings app

Depending on your phone if you have a doc when you hit the home button go all the way over to where you see a sort of circle with arrow and click that and it will keep your screen from rotating or IOS 7 you can do it from the Control Center.
