Went for a walk without AW, no activity

I woke up and went for a quick brisk walk but forgot my watch but had my phone with me. I used to get activity recorded before I got the watch but today was probably the first time I didn't have the watch with me.

Is that a thing once you start using the watch that the phone doesn't track you unless they are together?

Mine has always tracked me when I have my phone and not my watch. I don’t think I have checked without the series 3.

I would imagine the phone would still track steps, but I don't see how it could measure calories since there's no heartbeat monitor.

I think the iPhone only track steps too.
