The Apple Watch should automatically connect to the same 2.4Ghz wifi connection that your iPhone is connected to.
If your iPhone is connected to a 5Ghz wifi connection, the Watch won't connect as it only has 2.4Ghz bands available to it. What you can do in that event is to disable Bluetooth, turn off your Apple Watch, forget the 5Ghz wifi on your phone, connect to the 2.4Ghz wifi on your phone then restart the Apple Watch and connect it to your phone.
You are then free to rejoin the 5Ghz wifi connection on your phone.
It worked for me.
