So read an interesting interview with Jony Ive the other day where he said they aren't aiming to compete with luxury goods. So brought up an interesting point. If that is the case, then what is the edition watch aimed at competing with?
I guess it's not competing with anything. As far as I know there aren't any other 10-17k smart watches. It's not like instead of the Gold Watch I'll get X smart watch for 10-17k.

Smart tactic by Apple then.The Edition - in my opinion - was made to drive sales of the lower priced models. Apple will sell the Edition models to high-end athletes, stars, etc and people will see the Watch and want one because their favorite TV personality is wearing one and buy a SS or Sport model. I know for me at least seeing the Edition on various people over the past couple of weeks has made me want one more than I did when it was announced.
Not to mention the edition is pretty much pure profit for Apple, so they don't have to sell a crazy amount, since those are the ones who bring Apple the most profit.It exists, so it upsells those of us who buy midrange stuff.
I was going to wait till the second gen, then I was going to get a Sport, then I got a full Apple Watch. Once there's one going for 17k, paying 700US/900CDN doesn't seem so crazy. Although it is, of course.

I'm going to go with sport once they are back in stock. For a gen 1 product, 700-900 is too much for me. Maybe for gen 2 or 3.It exists, so it upsells those of us who buy midrange stuff.
