From what I've seen, there's a fair bit of simply random selection of winners. Makes it easier to stay up hoping to be the next winner though!

Typically Apple only charges your account when the product ships.

That's one of the reasons why I'm a bit hesitant to get that one. The website and promo shots don't show it as often as the silver.
