Apple Watch - what happened?
First off, I am not here to be a troll. I just want an actual discussion from the die hard Apple fans about the Apple Watch.
In the forums here and on other sites, the general consensus from the Apple faithful was that Apple was behind on the smartwatch market because they were going to wait and do it right, fixing all of the problems of the Android based watches.
So, my question is, why didn't that happen?
We still have the same giant square on a wrist, with no revolutionary features to speak of. Apple Watch does everything a Samsung or Android Wear will do, but there is no killer Apple only feature.
Perhaps they should have waited longer.

First edition of it, for one thing. And its looks grow on you, when you look at the different bands available.
I'd've preferred a circle, but it passes the "will I throw money at them for it" test.
(Not everything does. I've got a 5s and an iPad Air, and I'm going to stand pat with those this year, and possibly next year too.)

I got to agree with Pwrof3, the device has been 3 years in the making, with the benefit of studying its competitors, and they come up with this?! The design is not innovative, and many of the features already can be done on Android Wear and even Tizen.

I disagree regarding the "general consensus" statement. I've come across a good deal of posts where members can't wait to get the Watch.

what were you expecting from an Watch? How many ways can a watch be made? The same can apply to a smartphone. It's safe to assume that it'll have a display, a virtual keyboard and a selectable way to initiate apps. So again, what were YOU expecting from Apple in regard to the Watch?

Innovate design will be a moot issue if it outsells all of its competitors and it is a safe bet that it might. Then what? Will those who purchased the Watch be considered mindless idiots with no taste for design or will they be happy customers going about their business and sporting their new Watches?

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
Nothing happened- Apple developed a watch that they feel is up to their standards. I for one cant wait to get my hands on one...

Huh? It's moot to even talk about sale figures when the Apple Watch is not even out yet. ;)

More streamline, clean, and minimal design Apple is known for. Digital Crown is unnecessary and archaic. The other physical button, Contacts, should also be eliminated; should be achieved through voice commands or touchscreen.

But you're making assumptions about a product that is not even available to the public yet. These "If"s are moot.

Agreed. "I am not here to troll" rates with Nixon's "I am not a crook" speech. Like with a politician says "in all honesty". Not buying it.
Alex, I’ll take "Things a troll says" for $400, please.

It has the logo on it. It will sell millions. There’s probably a group of people already lined up somewhere to purchase it.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
Remember innovative means the take an existing design and or feature and make it significantly better. I think apple has done that with the majority of its products. The success shows in its sales numbers and taking a product and making it mainstream instead of a niche product. I think the Apple watch has the ability to do that. Like the original iPhone and the iPad did before. Also those products also helped push other manufactures and OS's to rethink their own product and make it better.

But how is the Apple Watch any better than others can't already do?

Well, I'm not really sure what I was expecting. But, certainly, something that did for smartwatches what iPhone did for smartphones.
The Apple Watch is more of just a me too device.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
Somebody got carried away with all those mock ups. They looked nice, but probably not feasible to produce. So now you criticize Apple's watch? I think it looks nice! And you have no idea what reasons Apple may have had for that design. It may have been the only way to include all that was included. GEEZ!

Nope, they didn't need to include Digital Crown.
ETA: Samsung is able to do it with their Gear S, and then some.

Attachment 64279
When Apple unveiled the iPhone, these above pictured phones were the most popular in the market at the time.
IPhone changed the game.
Perhaps I was expecting more of the same from the watch.

Didn't the OP not make reference to a "general consensus"? Isn't he making an assumption that a majority of people are unhappy with the Watch? Aren't you going along with that assumption by chiming in on what YOU thought the design should have like?
-
Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
How was the iPad better when it came out? Or the iPhone? What could they do that others couldn't? There were already existing products that were similar in both those categories now those products categories are mainstream. I really don't have enough experience with current smart watches, but I have not seen too many smart watches from the current crop with favorable reviews out there. I own a Pebble currently and I love it even though it has many limitations. I also have the Hot Smart Watch (if it every gets here, it may be vapor ware at this point) on order and it can do a little more than the Pebble, but not nearly as much as the Apple Watch. Making something innovative can include taking something that is out there and making it better and easier for the masses to use. I would say having NFC on your wrist is one example. Once you put the Watch on your wrist, you have your mobile payment system on your wrist, you don't even need to get your phone out of your pocket. Many of the way things work with apple products are small and simple, and yes its a closed ecosystem unlike Android, but obviously the general public likes simplicity over complexity and wants something that works well the majority of the time without thinking about it, tweaking it or creating complications to make it work the way you want and work intuitively.

So now you can either bust out your crystal ball and see the future or wait for it to happen. But you cannot state without certainty that Apple did not do the exact same thing with the WATCH. At least not yet.
How many tablets were attempted prior to iPad? Let’s wait and see what happens, shall we?

From a design standpoint, they certainly aren't game changing. Look at those phones in my picture and then look at phones now. All because of Apple.

Perhaps, but still, let's recall the last year's launch of the iPhone 5C. It was not innovative, it had a plastic casing, and was basically a repackaged iPhone 5, and yet, millions of them sold. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus isn't innovative, and some call it fugly, and yet, millions of each will be sold. Having said that, how important is being innovative as opposed to being successful and profitable?

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
The fact that it needs to be tethered to the iphone is a deal breaker for me. My main reason for wanting on would be to use as a fitness device. I'd want to use it when I run as a GPS to tell me hiw far I've gone, my pace, my avg. speed, etc. I'd also expect it to cross over to other activities such as biking and swimming. I'd also want to use it to send and receive text messages. However, having to also carry my phone while doing these activities defeats the purpose of a wearable device. I have a Suunto watch that does all of the things I mentioned, minus the text messages, without the need to carry my phone.
If apple can put all that together, plus he ability to receive texts as well as connect to wireless earphones the I'd be interested. I don't need photos. I don't need to send my heart rate to my friends, I don't need the ability to make little drawings, I need a device that stands on it's own without the need carry my phone. Apple failed as far as I'm concerned.

I agree somewhat. Why have a watch when you need to have the phone in your pocket the entire time? Since you're coming from a fitness perspective, having to have the phone attached to an armband or bouncing around in running shorts pockets does seem less than ideal.
You may want to wait a while and see what Microsoft has to offer. Yeah, I know, Microsoft isn't popular around here, but they are actually working on a device that focuses on health and fitness and will work with all of the phone platforms. Not sure if you'd actually have to have the pone with you.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
I have used my iPhone while I train for triathlons for years. The only thing I can't use it for is swim training. I like the security of having the phone available in case of emergency, for music, I need it with me because I must take work call, and I use several apps such as Strava, Runkeeper, nike run etc. So for me its great. I also have the garmin 310XT and I use the iphone/pebble more than my Garmin.

Digital Crown, imo, is unnecessary and archaic because there is no need to zoom anything on an already small screen. Having that physical dial is clumsy and inefficient. By the time you turn it to zoom and then tap to select your target, mind as well fetch out your phone. A smartwatch is supposed to make things more quickly and easily via swipes or voice commands. Who in the own right mind would want to zoom to look at a pict on a tiny screen? When your hands are tied up, voice commands or swipes are far more efficient then to turn a dial.
Having the Digital Crown can cause wear and tear to its mechanism down the road, like the “Pearl” of the Blackberry Pearl phone.
Samsung and Google got it better, imo. They really highlight easy swipes and their respective voice commands.
Furthermore, the Digital Crown button looks way too archaic. Apple is known for simple, clean, and modern designs, that knob thing, although it looks classy, makes the whole look not modern at all, to me. Samsung Gear S, on the other hand, looks very modern and futuristic…and DIFFERENT, and can do way more than the Apple Watch.

Vote with your wallet. If "Samsung and Google got it better" is your mantra, why are you even here? Go buy what you think will work in your situation. Opinions are just that - opinions. They aren’t universal facts. So buy what you want and allow others to buy what they want. I see this constant picking and "mine is better than yours" garbage as nothing more than juvenile insecurity. But rather than being happy with what you have, you want to tear down the options.

I guess I expect too much out of Apple. They have the benefit of knowing the competition, so I was hoping they would have produced something more compelling with another WOW factor. Doesn’t matter if I’m a big Samsung fan or not. What motivate me on a smartwatch are these things: modern & clean design, quickness & efficiency, stand alone, good battery life, and price.

Understandable but someone else may feel these things are already evident. Different strokes for different folks. Maybe the next iteration will be better for you.
Edit: BTW...I also have a GS5 & wouldn't even consider the Gear because it's not very fashion forward. You & so many others love it. It's just a difference in opinions.

I too have a Samsung GS5, but may consider the new IPhone 6 or 6 Plus cuz of their simple and modern design, and finally with a bigger screen. However, I love my Samsung Gear 2, and absolutely sold on the Gear S for its simple and modern curvy design, and its standalone features. Why can't I have the new IPhones with the new Gear S??? :(

I'm a traditional watch guy I like my swiss automatic's over these smart watches any day, with that said I was disappointed with the apple watch also. Was hoping for a nice small watch that accented my 5S not something that reminds me of a chunky bar and needs to tether to my phone.
I'm sure refined versions will be released in the future.

Having the Digital Crown can cause wear and tear to its mechanism down the road, like the “Pearl” of the Blackberry Pearl phone.
Now you're being silly. None of the Blackberry devices I've owned, including the pearl, were ever damaged. Having said that, why do some smartphones get scratched and nicked while inside a protective casing?
Samsung and Google got it better, imo. They really highlight easy swipes and their respective voice commands.

Okay, but which company will sell more, in your humble opinion? If it turns out to be Apple, will you man up and admit that your preferences didn't add up to a hill of beans and Consumers, as a whole, thought otherwise?

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
Well as always Apple is late but when they come, its with a bang. They spend a lot of time on their devices and features; Siri took 5-8 years (I can't remember which) to create and other companies have followed. I am a smartwatch follower and I have to admit I was very amazed by the Apple Watch. To me Apple has nothing else to prove; they put something out and no matter if we love it or not, its selling. If they would've waited any longer it would've been a huge issue because people like what they see with Samsung Gear/ Android Wear, they want it too! I know I do. Pebble isn't cutting it, Kreyos or any other watch that works with Apple; its just not the same.
I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only person excited about Apple Watch besides my friends. LOL I mean... watch the keynote! Its awesome.

Bang on. People, usually Apple-haters, always seem to hang this label onto Apple. "Oh Apple doesn't innovate, look at the design from the 4 to the 5 to the 6, lololol"
To them I say that Apple may not innovate in any way that the average user can see but every day, in ever way, they are getting better and better.
They take a great design and think "how can we make this BETTER?" if the 'better' means subtle changes under the hood then so be it. Innovation does not and never has meant sweeping changes and people need to understand this. Apple is a world leader because they know exactly what they are doing and don't make large leaps, like Samsung and others do (and look at the poor overall quality of their devices) and every change Apple makes it designed to tweak the performance or functionality to make the device perform better.
I swear that people seem to hate on Apple because it's the hip thing that all the 'cool kids' are doing. I know plenty of people that mock me for having Apple devices (and I care not one jot what others think of me) but have not ever tried an Apple device themselves. On the rare occasions when I have managed to get a few Android die-hards to use an iPhone, they have been blown away by the fluidity of the OS and the sturdy yet beautiful designs of the unit. In fact, my girlfriend, a staunch Android user, is ditching her Samsung and having my 5S when I get my iPhone 6 next week.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
I think the Apple watch albeit that it does look good compared to the LG G watch and galaxy gear, it comes with wide and easily changeable bands. That I give kudos but overall, I think they are trying to make a point with their OS more than the shape of the watch. I wasn't stoked to be honest.

So, my question is, why didn't that happen?
We still have the same giant square on a wrist, with no revolutionary features to speak of. Apple Watch does everything a Samsung or Android Wear will do, but there is no killer Apple only feature.
Perhaps they should have waited longer.
Allow me to dissect your concern.
First. May you elaborate on the "all of the problems of the Android based watches."? The statement is vague enough not to come up with specific discussion.
Second. What are you implying on your question, "Why didn't that happen?." Apple has failed with their iWatch?
Third. Is there a certainty that iWatch does not have a revolutionary feature? I supposed no detailed specs were disseminated yet.
-
Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
How can there be any real verdict on this, until we try it on our own wrists? The word of a tech editor can only go so far. (no offense iMore and other tech sites.) And as far as "revolutionary features" We haven't had the UI on our wrists yet. android wear is being criticized as "half-baked" and "not polished enough". Do you think Apple would spend three years on one product and NOT nail the UI?

I think the Apple Watch is going to be great. It has awesome styling and the apps look pretty too. I think as far as the pricing goes, it could be a tad lower but I am sure they will sell tons! I am def going to get one when they come out next year!

Now you're being silly. None of the Blackberry devices I've owned, including the pearl, were ever damaged. Having said that, why do some smartphones get scratched and nicked while inside a protective casing?
Okay, but which company will sell more, in your humble opinion? If it turns out to be Apple, will you man up and admit that your preferences didn't add up to a hill of beans and Consumers, as a whole, thought otherwise?

Here’s a video by Margques Brownlee, a tech enthusiast like myself. He’s quite objective in many of his reviews. Like me, he applauds the versatility and selection of the bands, but feels weird about the knob or Digital Crown, equating it to the Blackberry Pearl. And yes, I did own one prior to any touchscreen smartphones.
Regarding if the Apple Watch will sell more, it depends. Since Apple users are limited only to Apple’s ecosystem, would 5% of those users buy it and consider a success? Maybe 10%? And how about Android converters? Has Apple shared its sale projection? I don’t know.
Mummer43. I have owned 2 smartwatches, currently using the Samsung Gear 2. I believe the Samsung Gear S can satisfy your needs in terms of standalone, health/fitness checking, and text/email all without being tethered to the main phone. Of course, like Apple, it doesn’t work with other non-Samsung phones.

I normally have my phone with me as well... When I'm not working out. Having to carry those massive phones with you on a run or other such activity is far from convenient. I wouldn't call this device revolutionary, but that's just me. And I'm an apple guy. I'm also a watch guy, which is why I was hoping to love it. Sadly, I don't. I do, however love my new Omega Speedmaster.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
what happened?...................They announced the Apple Watch Sep 9th and it should be available early 2015.
Myself and MANY others are excited with the news and can't wait to get the Apple Watch.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
I sell these things daily and guess what people are saying about the gear? It's confusing! The setup process doesn't make sense.
You download apps from where? How do you set it up?
Or device questions. Why does the phone measure my heart rate and steps better than the watch?
So what people fail to understand about apple is... The are innovators even when it's not clear as day. They make it easy for the end user.
Yesterday... I sell a lady a memory card for her Galaxy s5 that had no internal space. I set it to transfer all her media to the card... She then leaves. Hour later, she calls in to find out if it worked because she saw an error message and the low storage message was still there. She had to restart the phone for the message to go away. That's it!
I let someone leave with an apple product, I don't hear from them unless they want to know about apps they should download. I sell android, and I'm almost guaranteed to see them back soon.
I'm almost positive that after the original set up on the iPhone and apple watch, I won't be hearing from them like I would if I sold them a gear and Galaxy.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
I don’t think the Op was questioning the software and the apple eco system not working together. He was more concerned about the look of the watch it self, even
when I read Apple hired Swiss Tec’s to help innovate the watch I was excited, I was thinking styles like the Explorer, Omega Deville, Submariner along those line that is why I was disappointed in the Apple watch that square modern look just is not for me.

I'm sure it disappointed a lot of people. No device is for everyone and that's why it's always good to have choices. When one doesn't fit the bill for you, get one that does. It's really that simple.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
Apple has me interested in the watch big time. I haven't worn a watch in years and I always wore a watch pre iPhone.
The fact that it's not dropping until 2015 is smart on Apples part because I believe that there are many folks like myself that the idea of the Apple watch is stewing in them and will want one when it drops.
If they would have released Apple watch same time as iPhone 6 it wouldn't be enough time to convert the "I don't want it folks" like myself. As they days go by I'm leaning more and more to I want it.
I feel like the Apple watch is a extension of the iPhone like the iPhone was a extension of the Mac.
Reading a article on Apple watch possibilities for musical applications definitely peaked my interest. Such as a metronome tempo being transmitted through the watch. A tempo felt instead of being heard.
The fact that it's a Apple device it falls right into my device chain. It doesn't have to be better or slicker than a Samsung watch.
The digital crown could prove to be a plus for certain tasks and apps that could be developed. There are a lot of devices where a physical knob still works.
I think the apps to come for the Apple watch will make it revolutionary or not like the iPad.
The app devs will look at Apple watch apps as a extension to their iPad/iPhone and Mac apps.
It seems now the innovation is not necessarily the device but what you can do with the device. This is not to say that there is not or will never be hardware innovation.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
I think many of you actually miss the OP's point, or at least the way I interpret it.
The iPod, iPhone, and iPad are the big hits since 2000, and usually what people refer to when they talk about the current legacy of Apple. With the iPod and iPhone it was obvious from the start that they were game changers. Maybe not complete, but definitely a statement of the way mp3 players and smartphones should be made. The iPad was less evident, but still totally different than any tablet released to that point. Media at the launch stated clearly that the iPad was something you had to use to understand, and that was quickly verified by people using it, then "getting" it.
With the Apple Watch, it screams "me too!" It looks and operates like everything else out there. The features are the same. It doesn't say to the existing market, "Hey, this is the way to do it." It isn't unique or different. It really is a me too product. That is something we haven't seen from Apple, arguably, ever. And the tech media is saying the same. Even Andy Ihnatko of MacBreak Weekly has said that it doesn't really do much to differentiate itself, and that he is hoping there is more to be said on the watch from Apple. That doesn't mean it won't be successful, or sell a ton of units, but it does beg the question, is the era of Apple coming to a close?
Full disclosure, I am a huge Apple fan. I only own Macs. Have owned every iPhone, and have never been tempted by another. I am an Apple supporter through and through. However, I am not blind, and I do not see the watch in the way many of the various Apple forum users do.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
I know a ton of folks myself included that thought the same of the iPad. We looked at it as a giant iPhone.
Now these same folks myself included depend on the iPad for work as musicians.
The majority of this innovation is the results of what devs have done with the iPad. Having access to a roomful of keyboards all in a iPad. I could go on and on with examples.
I have no idea how the Apple Watch will be used or could be used. Their are folks that do just that, think of stuff to do with these devices app wise.
I'm curious to see what devs may do with this device.
The OP's Title says "What Happened?" With device development it's wait and see what happens.
These devices seem to be more about evolution than revolution.
You have people doing everything with iPads from storing weekly dinner recipes to tuning Concert Grand Pianos. This is all possible with app development and of course with the device becoming more powerful. It very possible the same range of tasks could be done with a Apple Watch in the future and the future in mobile device terms is a few years.

From what was announced, it depends on what you mean by "work"? Will it tell time without an iPhone? Of course. It will have some onboard storage that can be used for music and played via Bluetooth to headphones. I think it's a safe assumption that the pulse monitor and pedometer type functions will work without a phone nearby. The biggest unknown seems to be if it will require the iPhone for GPS services.

Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
For me, the hardware aesthetics left a lot to be desired, but I think it will be "iconic" a decade from now. The digital crown might be a serious gimmick, however, especially considering that most of the demoed interactions with the apple watch were via the touchscreen.
That said, I LOVE the home screen / icon map, and I'm strangely totally down for sending friends / strangers my heartbeat.

Wow. I had the exact opposite reaction. I thought it was as amazing as the iPhone. Especially after using products like the jawbone up, up24, pebble, Nike Fuelband, Fitbit, LG G Watch and now Moto 360. I'm really excited by apple watch. Android wear, while good, isn't anywhere near as interesting to me as apple watch. I can't wait to buy one.
-
Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
I have a Pebble, and I am really excited for the Apple Watch. When I saw the Apple Watch and compared it with the Pebble, I knew it was MUCH better than the Pebble. At first, I wasn't chomping at the bit to get one, but the more and more I look at the Smartwatch market, especially the Apple Watch, I know I want to buy one. I think it offers the best feature set out there, with the exception of the Gear S that can make calls and stuff without being tethered to a phone, and in my opinion the second best design of a smartwatch (Moto 360 is still my favorite looking).
I think it is a well rounded device with a lot of useful features, great design, and quality build. I personally can't wait to get my hands on one.
-
Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
The features in the new Apple watch are constrained by state of the art technology. Everyone faces this constraint. Apple's advantage is its ecosystem and tight integration with its other devices. Not to mention its high quality.
-
Re: Apple Watch - what happened?
Apple isn't just about beating the competition. They're also about making devices that people want to use (and in this case, wear). Most people will wait and see what the Apple Watch looks like on the wrists of early adopters before buying one, and many will wait for the second or even third iteration of the device before buying one, but if Apple did what they do best (and I'm betting at least $349.00 plus tax that they did), the experience of using the watch is what will sell the watch. Not because it's "better" or "more stylish", but because day in and day out it "just works" and in ways that will feel intuitive and natural as soon as you strap one on. So yes, others have done the watch before, with sales and gimmicks in the forefront. Apple is concerned about sales too, and they may have thrown a few gimmicks in for good measure, but they tend to put the experience of the end user first. It just happens to work out for them well on Wall Street, but their focus is on Main Street.
