From time to time, I will flick my wrist, and notice a padlock on my Apple Watch's screen.

Normally, I only expect to see this, the first time I put the watch on, for the day. Well, until I either unlock the watch with my code, or unlock my iPhone XS Max.

In seeing the padlock during the day, is it safe to say my watch may have lost connectivity with the phone (no cellular service)?

    Thanks
    Ivan

No, it will reconnect on its own if that happens. The padlock means that your watch has lost wrist detection, so it has locked itself. The most obvious reason that this happens is that you are wearing the watch too loose.

Also, there are some things that affect the heart rate readings (though I am not sure if this affects wrist detection, but if you have a good fit, one of these may be the reason)

    - you have a tattoo on your wrist that interferes with the heart rate sensor from seeing blood flow
    - I have also read that darker skin can affect this for some people.
    - cold temperatures can also affect this

Apple has a support page for this...

I have owned a watch myself for 26 months and have only once or twice noticed a time when my watch thought it wasn't unlocked, though I think in every case it truly was that I put the watch on without unlocking it or my phone afterwards. But, I'm a white guy, I have no tattoos.

One other thing: this is a year or so old, but I did once see this tattoo issue solution on reddit. Obviously I can't swear for it myself, but if unlocking continues to be an issue despite a good fit, this may be worth a try.

Oh, and, of course, there is the potential that this is an issue with the hardware on the watch, so you can always try to call AppleCare or make a Genius Bar appointment.
