Depends on what you mean by this. Generally you connect your Apple TV directly to your TV. OR do you mean you want to run your Apple TV in to your Mac's monitor? As long as the Monitor has HDMI input and can be turned on without the rest of the Mac it should work. If the whole mac needs to be turned on (iMac) then you need it to be on. Are you sure it has HDMI input?
