If the film is in your iTunes library, there's no need to AirPlay as the AppleTV can play anything in your iTunes library directly if you've set it up properly.

I don't think streaming from a third party app to the AppleTV is possible except through screen mirroring? I know I only got the ATV2 as it could be hacked to run ATVFlash Black, which installs Infuse, and lets me stream media stored on a hard drive and not in iTunes.

But streaming from inside an app to an ATV, I think that's going to have to be mirroring.

I reckon that will need to be done my mirroring your iMac's display. Don't think you can stream from a third party mac app to an ATV any other way?
