There should be a new version of the ATV software when iOS8 launches publicly - just check via the on-scren menu. Perhaps you could email Tim and ask why he doesn't talk much about the AppleTV...

It needs an update. I just got one and man is it behind in quality compared to other Apple devices (though I've been feeling that a lot more since iOS 8 came out about all Apple products )
