What is the difference between apple TV and an ipad that has the HDMI out adapter?

It seems to me the ipad has a lot less restrictions on what content is available.

For example, I can watch NFL games on my ipad via the NFL sunday ticket app, but apple TV doesnt offer the content (channel) at all. What am I missing?

    Thanks.

I suppose that the iPad gives you more options. Go with what you prefer.

It's just a pain to use the ipad in that fashion is all. Plus it ties it up. An apple tv is pretty cheap though so it's not really a major decision.

    It's mainly a convenience factor

The NFL probably wants a lot of loot to have a app on Apple TV to stream games.
It's not impossible but from what I've read Direct TV pays 700 million a year to the NFL.
