Hi folks,
I've got some Apple TV's and tried the recent PlexConnect hack. It works fine on Windows 7. Basically it lets you play media from your computer drive (any machine running PMS and the Python script which can be Mac, Windows or Linux) and make them appear under the Trailer section on your Apple TV. No iTunes needed, no AirPlay, etc... Just copy all your movies to a hard drive, and share it with Plex Media Server and it will work... over Wi-Fi or Ethernet... doesn't matter.
Here are the instructions and links in this video:
You need to download for Windows:
1. Plex Media Server (PMS)
2. Python 2.7.5.
3. PlexConnect scripts from iBaa/PlexConnect
(full instructions here: https://github.com/iBaa/PlexConnect...hernet-internet-connection-installation-guide)
After you download, install and run PMS and set up your media-containing folders Library.
Launch PlexConnect.py and it will open a console window and set up the server. You can watch what is happening in the console as your Apple TV talks to your computer.
Then you set up your Apple TV....
1. Configure DNS to your local machine (above) that you have PMS and PlexConnect running on
2. Go to your Trailers app on Apple TV
3. View your playlists/library from PMS showing up
4. Select a video and press PLAY/PAUSE button directly (don't press circle button)
- some videos won't show thumbnails but they will still play
I've confirmed it works. Takes a bit of trouble-shooting but it does work.
Common problems: PMS sometimes hangs, and the PlexConnect.py script says "No Plex Media Server running". To fix without rebooting, open TASK MANAGER and find all your Plex apps and also console and END PROCESS. Close Plex and everything down. Then run again in the following order.... Plex Media Server (will show up in icon tray), and then launch your PlexConnect.py script again and see if it finds PMS.
Also, if Apple TV has issues then make sure you have the correct PlexConnect.py installed for the correct Apple TV OS (either pre-OS 5.1 or 5.2+). You can just back out of your menu and then enter Trailer section again.
