Apple TV question

I am thinking of getting the new Apple TV or a refurbished (previous gen) Apple TV (with hard disk).

Will the Apple TV apps such as YouTube stream 1080p content by default?

I am contemplating the old Apple TV as it has a hard disk that can be used to store content. Any suggestions??

As far as i am aware ATV2 will only stream 720p, whether this is the same for ATV1 i dont know. And when i was on youtube on my ATV2 i didnt see an option to change quality of the video.

i think it automatically tries to get the best quality based on your connection speed
