Why can't I get dolby 5.1?

same problem here I use the optical out of the atv and put it in the theater system... but 5.1 dolby is not showing on the theater system... even when I'm watching a movie with 5.1 Dolby in it...

I don't have mine yet, supposed to be here today but are you sure there are no options within the device itself?

I run it through my receiver, if I swap inputs with BluRay or Dish, surround works fine on all inputs except when fed by the Apple TV.

Your best option is to use the fiberoptic or coax digital audio output of your Blu-ray player connected directly to your receiver. Your TV should still get 2-channel sound via the HDMI connection so the TV speakers will work, but your receiver will get a 5.1-channel Dolby Digital or DTS soundtrack from DVDs and Blu-ray Discs.
