Apple TV 4K on 1080p TV

I'm considering getting an Apple TV 4K and wondered if they'll still work on a 1080p TV, as that's what I've currently got & would like to future proof as I can't see the point in paying the higher price of the Apple TV 4th Gen compared to the price of the new Apple TV 4K?

I ended up getting the 64GB model of the Apple TV 4K, & apart from a handful of streaming/on demand apps that aren't currently available on the Apple TV I'm loving it.
