Is there a separate/hidden volume setting for AirPods

I'm listening to YouTube on my MBP which is paired with my AirPods. I've the volume at Max (both YouTube and on the Mac), but the volume isn't loud enough. I know the AirPods can push more volume, so I did a little investigation. (Warning, if you try this, do not have your Mac volume at 100% - it can get VERY LOUD!)

Here's what I did:
1) Open iTunes and play a song.

2) While the song is playing, go into the Sound Settings, Selecting the Output Tab, the AirPods are selected and the volume = 50%.

3) Now, clicking on the Input tab, the volume literally doubles (and the quality is muffled a bit).

4) Click back to the Output tab. The volume decreases and quality is improved?

Why is this and where can I bump up the volume??? I don't know if this happens with directly wired earbuds, but I find this very curious.

I don't know, but since you've discovered what could be a bug, you might as well report it to Apple via their feedback option.

Strange. Sounds like a bug. That said, I’ve not had any volume issues with my AirPods. Not even during my runs outside with traffic noise or on a treadmill with all of the motor noise.
