What's that funny looking "dock" with 2nd gen Touch?

I just bought a 2nd gen iPod Touch. It came with this white plastic piece that some web sites call "docking adapter" (no instructions in the box from apple ...)

What is that thing? Adapter for what? The iPod is too thin to stand up straight in that. The slot at the bottom is too small for the connector to pass through.

TIA

That adapter is to allow the touch to fit into an Apple universal dock. You can also use it to make the touch fit into some iPod compatible clock radios/speakers

so much for the "universal" dock

Most Universal docks come with these adapters. It just makes the ipod more secure in the dock, the dock will work without it, but it will be loose and the possiblity of damaging the dock are higher.
