what can be done to import a dvd from my home collection into itunes? Or is the only option i have is to hope its on the itunes store?

Bad Ash nailed it.

My own procedure was to use Handbrake (multi-platform) to pull in everything to Apple TV format, then Visual Hub (Mac) to down sample what I need to iPhone format, on demand.

Works a treat.
