Starting to Use Apple Photos

I have had an iPhone for a while and always utilized Google Photos. I recently purchased a MacBook and am using the Photos app and love it. I have uploaded everything to iCloud and wish to start using iCloud Photos on my iPhone. I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this so I don't delete anything and also don't end up with a bunch of duplicates. Here's what I'm thinking...

1. Turn off backup/sync on Google Photos.

2. Delete the photos from my camera roll.

3. Turn on iCloud Photos.

I'm thinking by doing these steps it will do a fresh download of all my photos in iCloud and then proceed normally after. My intention is to stop using Google Photos altogether.

Will these steps work? Thoughts.

I would not delete or change your old work flow or system before you are satisfied with the new. Remember backing up is not just for truck drivers.

I'm doing something similar but it's more about how I use Lightroom, and family members who are all Apple users. My safety strategy in working it all out is keeping a copy of all Photos on at least two devices, and keeping an eye on deleted photos.
