My iPhone 3 screen is entirely black...the phone rings and vibrates but screen is black.

I have re-booted to no avail.

I'm sorry you're having this issue. If a hard reset doesn't help then you should probably make an appointment with the Genius Bar at your local Apple store. If you're running an iPhone 3GS, it may be time for a new phone as that one is fairly old.
