If the home button doesn’t work, how can I get Assistive Touch on the screen?

If the “home” button does not work on an iPad, how do you get to the home screen after the new iOS12 download? I went to the settings, general, accessibility and made sure assistive touch was selected, but no home button appeared on my screen. Please help?

“Home button” missing on screen after iOS12

Ask Siri to enable assistive touch. When I did, it enabled it and placed the digital home button on the screen.
